PANOS MITSOPOULOS

Falling figures, balancing shades and cage constructions, sometimes happy, floating in space like they are trying in vain to blend into one another. The work of Panos Mitsopoulos reflects resistance and unsteadiness and it reflects the liberation which exists in a transition or a changeover in life.
The work shows the inner self of the artist who grew up in Greece and changed his life radically to study his art in depth in Holland.
At first painting is a specific way to withdraw from his daily routines which keeps him in balance in the strange world of made-to-measure-costumes and package holidays of the 5 star hotel in Athens where he works.
As an autodidact he teaches himself the basic-techniques of painting. He builds up his compositions proceeding from a monochrome background with the use of acrylic paint and sprays. He still feels naive and uninhibited by any in-depth knowledge of painting, his art is expressive and spontaneous. A critic compares his work to that of Jackson Pollock, an artist completely unknown to him at this time.
